Ultra Wide Monitor Purchase Guide and FAQ
How we choose our monitors
In creating this comprehensive buying guide, we made sure to include the types of dots most ultrawide monitor users would like to include:
Brand – As with all products for which we provide a comprehensive buying guide, it’s not uncommon to see the best brands included on our list. With the big ultra-wide monitor brands that are Dell, Samsung and LG, it was somehow inevitable that these market leaders would make it to the top.
Of course, it’s not only these consistent performers in delivering well-designed and highly practical widescreen monitors that gained our full attention when we included this list, but also some of the lesser-known manufacturers in this highly competitive market.
Reviews – As most buyers of stylish widescreen computer monitors will appreciate, paying attention to what consumers of these products have to say is an integral part of the selection process.
By being willing to consider all the points raised by experienced users of the best oversized desktop monitors, we were able to narrow down the elite members of this division who deserved more computer experience.
Price – While there may be plenty of computer users with a lot of money to spend setting up their ultimate gaming or movie-watching experience, that doesn’t mean the more expensive products will always be at the top of our list.
In fact, while it’s often true to say we get what we pay for, it’s entirely possible to discover massive screens for sale that are surprisingly cheap when you consider just what we get for our hard earned money.
Features to look for in ultra wide monitors
Resolution – While not all computer users are familiar with monitor jargon, it certainly helps to know at least some of the terms used. As a general rule, the size of the screen and the number of pixels it has determines the resolution of the image you can expect – how sharp the images will be. An image on a 34-inch screen with a resolution of 800×600 will not be as sharp as on a 17-inch screen with the same resolution.
And since most computer monitors have a higher pixel resolution image than most TVs, it’s no wonder gamers and movie buffs use a monitor for their home entertainment needs. The monitors included on this list all have impressive image resolution with high pixel ratios – some more impressive than others.
HDR – Gamers who don’t need to be told why HDR ( High Dynamic Range) is crucial when playing shooters or sports games will likely enjoy the best things in life. In fact, if you see the significant difference between an image with HDR and one that doesn’t support this technical detail, purchasing an HDR- capable computer monitor will be a breeze.
In short, HDR helps create a more accurate picture of what the monitor is trying to show – areas of the image that should be dark will remain dark – areas that should be much brighter will also have full integrity. While sRGB-only monitor models are great when it comes to color gamut, HDR displays that support the Rec2019 color gamut are far superior.
Upgrade Rates – Buyers of ultra-large monitors who are unaware of most of the technical jargon used to describe the features of these PC components should avoid getting too confused. And while you don’t need to know that refresh rate is tied to the number of times per second the monitor refreshes the image and is measured in hertz (Hz), it’s still useful to understand the difference between the Hz numbers.
In fact, the higher the number of Hz in the spec, the more the monitor is able to update every second. In some cases, you can purchase a computer monitor that allows users to adjust the refresh rate of the monitor.
Aspect Ratio – Another common computer display term that monitor buyers need to know is aspect ratio. When we talk about aspect ratio, we are referring to the aspect ratio of the screen. To put this into perspective, the aspect ratio is the ratio of the height to the width of the monitor in question.
The aspect ratio is expressed by two numbers separated by a colon – 16: 9 is the most regular. And since the 21: 9 aspect ratio found on the best ultra-wide monitors included in our guide is ideal for watching movies or gaming on the big screen, it’s no surprise that monitors that offer 21: 9 or greater make up our entire list.
Cable Management – As most graphic designers, web designers, and gaming enthusiasts will no doubt appreciate, lots of cables running to the back or side of computers and monitors are a recipe for a nice mess.
While you don’t mind being in the middle of a bunch of cable noodles, the benefits of good cable management are worth keeping in mind. With that in mind, we’ve taken the time to bring you some ultra-wide monitors that incorporate this important aspect of your computer setup.
Panel Type – There are four main types of computer panels, namely VA, OLED, TN and last but not least – IPS. Looking at our list of the best ultra-wide monitor choices, you’ll notice that IPS is included in most if not all of the top display specs.
It is important for buyers to determine if their computer use requires IPS or one of the other options. If you only play video games or need an ultra-wide screen with the right type of panel, it’s up to you to choose the best screen for your specific needs.
Curved – Ask any avid gamer how it feels to play action games on a huge monitor with a curved screen and they’ll probably say something like “absolutely awesome dude”! Of course, it’s not just gaming junkies who can benefit from a curved display – total immersion in the game, but movie buffs who are looking for a more cinematic experience as well.
The range of curved monitor options starts at 34 inches and goes up to 43 inches or more. Resolutions also vary significantly – we have full HD (1920×1080 pixels), the smoother option in 16: 9 aspect ratio up to the more impressive 21: 9 aspect ratio which gives us the highest WQHD (3440×1440 pixels).
Inputs – There are a variety of input options for your ultra-wide monitor. The most common are DVI, DisplayPort and probably the most used of all inputs – HDMI. Of course, let’s not forget to mention the USB ports used to connect computer monitors of all sizes – USB Type C is one of the most useful according to some of the geeky computer users.
We should consider the differences between each of these common display input systems – paying close attention to the pixel resolution value of each. The good news is that the HDMI (1920×1.080 / 60) image resolution is no different than DVI or DisplayPort with (1920×1.080 / 60) until you change the settings.
Additional Capabilities – It’s understandable that computer users who like to go their own way will go astray to buy an ultra-wide display that has all the best components. Finding a large PC monitor with extra features is a right of way for people who are passionate about getting the most out of their computer.
With this in mind, it’s worth noting that some ultra-wide displays allow us to use native resolutions on current generation video cards. For gamers looking to optimize their experience, it is possible to run games on a current graphics card without having to upgrade.
